There are somewhere between 1 and 100 million fungal species in the world, and with high throughput sequencing now producing giant piles of data from different parts of the world, we’re beginning to now who is where and when. But the real challenge will be to begin to understand the functional differences across all of those tips. We’ve just started an effort to bring these data together.
We now have a framework to fill in trait data from across the kingdom and begin to have a start on understanding the functional ecology of this amazingly diverse group of organisms. For more check out our recent paper in Biological Reviews.
